What do we want to be in life? It seems like a simple question, but the truth is that choosing a career is one of the most important decisions that young people must face when entering a university. A decision in which several factors must be considered, among them, the interests, the capacities that each individual has, the vocation, etc. My name is Joseline Zavala I’m a senior at the University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Seven years ago I moved to the United States. For me that was one of the most hard experiences because the lack of the language. But thanks to my professors and family support I was able to graduate from Greenfield High School and completed my Associate’s Degree in Spanish at Hartnell College. Now that I have completed my Associates Degree I want to get my Bachelor Degree in Spanish as well at CSUMB. But my long-term goal is to become a university Spanish professor. I chose this career because of the challenges it will be presented. Spanish was always a challenge for me, I could speak it, write it, but I never understood the rules and as well the history behind this beautiful language. I decided to continue this career here in the United States to help preserve the Spanish language and teach this beautiful language to the next generations. I want to be able to teach thousands of Chicanos and diverse of people who wants to learn where this language comes from. Education is the key to a bright future. Nowadays education helps us to fulfill our dreams and to have double or even more opportunities to obtain a job. Persuading an abbreviated education can be difficult, but always bear in mind that everything that has a greater risk, the reward is much more higher than something easy to achieve. I believe that once completing my bachelors degree I will be able to contribute to society and our community much more than any other. I will be able to be in the forefront of these childrens life. It was thought to most of us at a young age a child's character is based on two main influences, home and school. I am the perfect candidate for this position, as I was an immigrant and strived to use every resource in my ability to achieve in contributing back to my community. As Cesar Chavez, great chicano activist once said, “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” My parents and my grandmother have been my engine to get ahead every day. Since I was little my grandmother took care of me without having to do it, she taught me to have values and principles. My parents on the other hand sacrificed their dreams for my siblings and me. They like thousands of immigrants decided to follow the American dream to be able to give a better life to their children. Today I give so many thanks to them for helping me and being there all the time, for not letting me fall or making me perform so easily. And most of all I give my mother so many thanks because every day she gets up at 5 in the morning to go to work for the most immense reason to see her children fulfill their goals and dreams. That makes me feel more proud than nothing. Because learned from her to be hardworking, honest and a happy person.
