MLO 3 Literacy and Cultural knowledge Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
Under this criteria, I have completed the courses: SPAN 306: Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America. SPAN 304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature. SPAN 321: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature: Span 426- Narrativa Hispanoamericana
Reflective Narrative Span 321 was an introduction to the spanish culture. In this course we acquire knowledge about the historical, political, and social context of the Peninsular Spanish experience. In this class also we knowledge some of the history of Spain, we learned about “The spanish conquest of the aztec empire”, the diverse geography and culture. In this course I have the opportunity to read “Lazarillo de Tormes” that is an anonymous picaresque novel. This novel which tells the story of a boy who works for different men in different places of society. This novel represent some of the most controversial social problems during the 16 century in Spain. Span 426 This course studies Spanish American writers of the 20th century by emphasizing short stories and novels from the last 50 years. Uses literary texts to gain an understanding of Latino cultures, societies, and values (Course description). In this course I was able to learn how to analyze different stories and novels from the last 50 years. Also this course introduced us to learn about amazing writers. Some of the amazing writer that we study were; Julio Cortazar, Alejo Carpentier, Jorge Luis Borges y Carlos fuentes. In this course we have the opportunity to learn about “El boom” “ Lo real maravilloso” “El realismo mágico” “Lo fantástico” etc. This on base of differents stories and novels for example; El reino de este mundo, Aura, La cabala, el aleph etc. Span 304 This course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. Taught in Spanish. This was one of my favorite course because it introduced me to the literature world. In this course I learned about the poetry structure, for example we studied topics like; Rhythm, Versification, language, tone, metaphor of figurative language etc. Also we learned about the different literary movements and their historic context. Some of ths movements were; Renaissance Literature. The Enlightenment, Romanticism, Victorian Literature,Realism, Naturalism, Modernism etc. In another hand we also learned about some of the elements of the theater and drama some of them were; plot, character, thought, diction,music,spectacle, etc. Span 306 This course presents a historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and video clips. In this course I learned about “Latin America”. We learned a little introduction about every 20 sovereign states and several territories make up “Latin America”. This course is an introduction of topics like: pre- columbian civilizations, the differents civilization in Mesoamerica and South America. In this course I learned about the geography and topography of Latin America. For our final project we had the opportunity to learn how to use google maps. We used the website Google Mymaps, the project consisted in choosing one civilization of Latin America and indicates where they were located and investigate about their geography and topography.
